Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a procedure that is non-invasive and does not involve the use of any radiation. MRI uses a very strong magnet, radiofrequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed images of organs, tissues, bone, and other internal structures of your body. A radiologist interprets these images to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions.

Diagnostic Imaging Center of Dasman Diabetes Institute houses two state-of-the-art machines (1.5 Tesla (SIGNA Artist) – wide-bore & 3 Tesla) for comfortable and precise imaging.

In case you are claustrophobic, please talk to your referring doctor prior to the appointment.

Note: Procedures under anesthesia are not performed at our Diagnostic Imaging Center.

Contraindications:

As MRI involves a magnetic field, you will be asked metal safety questions at the time of your appointment. While many implants are compatible with the MRI machine, certain implants may not be allowed inside the scan room for safety reasons.

Some examples of such implants are listed below:

  1. Cardiac pacemakers: The technologist will check and decide as per its type.
  2. Prosthetic heart valve:The technologist will check and decide as per its type.
  3. Intracranial aneurysm clips
  4. Ferromagnetic implants e.g. in middle ear
  5. Metallic foreign body (insulin pump, intra-orbital implant, intra-osseous implant, bullets, shrapnel)
  6. Neurostimulators
  7. Metal particles or chips in your eye and retinal tacks
  8. Magnetically activated biomedical devices (such as a defibrillator, eye implant or ventricular peritoneal shunt)
  9. Free Style Libre Sensor (Flash glucose monitoring system): The technologist will check and decide as per its type.

In case you have any implants, it is helpful to have the make and model of the implant handy to make it easier to verify whether the implant is MR-safe. By informing the radiology personnel of any metal implants in advance, your safety can be ensured and necessary modifications to procedures can be done.

In certain cases, a clearance from your doctor regarding the implants will be required to facilitate a smooth appointment.

CT Scan

Computed Tomography (CT scan)

Computed Tomography (CT)is a non-invasive procedure which uses X-rays. X-rays are taken at different angles and a computer processes the information to create cross-sectional images of nearly any part of your body including bones, blood vessels and soft tissue.

Dasman Diabetes Institute (DDI) offers advanced CT technology to our patients ensuring high quality of images while using the least possible radiation dose to your body.

Unlike the MRI scanner, CT scanners are open machines, and you will be able to see around you.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound & Vascular Lab

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a noninvasive imaging technique that uses high frequency sound waves and their echoes to produce images of organs and body’s internal structures. A probe sends the sound waves into the body and depending on the echoes received back 2D images are formed on a screen. The radiologist then interprets these images and makes a report. 

Doppler Ultrasound (Vascular Lab)

Doppler ultrasound is a special type of ultrasound that evaluates blood flow of upper and lower limbs. It uses sound waves to evaluate the body’s circulatory system. This helps to identify blockages in the arteries and veins and detects blood clots and arteriosclerosis. The use of cuffs applied at different positions on the limb to produce compression is one reason that makes this study different from a regular ultrasound.

DEXA Scan

DEXA Scan

DEXA Scan is a procedure which is non-invasive and uses a very small amount of radiation to measure and diagnose:

  • Total body composition (density, body fat, muscle mass, and total fat tissue percentage).
  • Bone mineral densitometry (BMD) to assess osteoporosis – a condition where the bones become weak and brittle and are prone to fractures
