Dasman Diabetes Institute in collaboration with Harvard University recently organized a two-day, conference titled “Diabetic Foot Basics Conference”, on 9th – 10th November 2014. It was co-organized by Harvard’s Dr. Kevin Riemer in collaboration with Dasman’s Dr. Adel Al-Ali, Director of Clinical Research under the leadership of Dr. Kazem Behbehani.

Harvard’s Dr. John Giurini’s talks focused on “The Role of Neuropathy in Diabetic Foot Disease” and “How do Diabetic Foot Ulcers Develop?”. Harvard’s Kevin Riemer‘s talks explored “Identifying Infection” and the need for patient education.

This conference was an introduction to the principles of effective clinical treatment, management and screening of diabetic foot to be used by multidisciplinary health care professionals in both the hospital and primary care. Through didactic and interactive sessions, delegates were introduced to models of clinical instruction and how to apply these effective techniques to their own patient care. The need for establishing a guidelines based multi-disciplined approach in Kuwait governmental primary care and hospitals was identified.
The conference also had small workshops that trained delegates individually on how to perform a routine foot examination for patients with diabetes.

The conference was attended by over 110 delegates, including faculty, staff and students from Dasman and the University of Kuwait, Ministry of Health and private hospitals.
